Why registration is where ABDM succeeds or fails
ABHA is captured at the front desk, so the workflow you design there decides whether staff use it. If creating or verifying an ABHA adds two minutes to every registration, it will be skipped within a week. The goal is a flow that is faster than typing demographics by hand.
This is the first piece of the ABDM integration most hospitals build, and corresponds to milestone M1.
Three ways a patient arrives
- ✓Already has an ABHA — the patient shares it by QR scan, ABHA address or number, and the HIS pulls the verified demographics.
- ✓Wants to create one now — the HIS starts creation using the supported methods, such as Aadhaar-based OTP or mobile-based flows, and confirms the result.
- ✓Declines — registration continues normally and the patient is never blocked from care. This must be explicit in the workflow.
Design rules that keep the front desk fast
- ✓Pre-fill the registration form from the verified ABHA profile rather than asking staff to retype.
- ✓Show verification status clearly — verified, pending, failed — and the next action for each.
- ✓Make failures recoverable: OTP timeouts and network drops should offer a retry without losing the form.
- ✓Detect duplicates before saving by matching on ABHA first, then on name, date of birth and mobile.
- ✓Log every ABHA action with user, time and outcome for audit. See audit trails in healthcare software.
Linking care contexts
After a visit, the hospital links it to the patient's ABHA as a care context so the patient can see that visit in their health app. Decide up front what counts as a linkable visit (OPD consultation, admission, diagnostic report), how a care context is named, and who triggers the link: staff, or automatically when the visit closes.
Linking should happen only when the patient's ABHA is verified and the record is complete enough to share. This ties directly to the HIP role.
Data protection at the desk
ABHA details are personal data. Limit who can view them, avoid copying ABHA numbers into spreadsheets, and make sure a patient's choice to decline or later unlink is respected. The DPDP checklist covers the obligations in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can a patient be refused treatment without an ABHA?
No. ABHA creation is voluntary and your workflow should let registration proceed without it.
What is a care context?
A care context groups the records of one visit or episode so it can be linked to a patient's ABHA and shared with consent.
What if the patient's name differs between ABHA and our HIS?
Use the ABHA-verified demographics as the reference, flag the mismatch for staff and keep an audit record of any correction.
